Halloween Word Search: 5 Free Puzzles to Play Online or Print (+ Make Your Own)
Looking for a Halloween word search for a classroom, a party or a quiet ten minutes with a cup of something pumpkin-spiced? Below are five free Halloween word search puzzles you can play right in your browser — no download, no sign-up — or print as worksheets with an answer key. Each one opens in Lexicross, our free word search game, and works on a phone, a tablet, a laptop or a classroom smartboard.
They range from a gentle 8×8 grid for young children to a 15×15 haunted-house puzzle where words hide backwards and diagonally. Pick the one that suits your players, or scroll down to learn how to make your own Halloween word search with your own spooky words.
The 5 Halloween word search puzzles
1. Halloween Night — Easy (ages 5+)
A small 8×8 grid with six short, friendly Halloween words. Every word reads left to right or top to bottom, so it is a great first word search for young children and early readers.
Words to find: PUMPKIN · GHOST · WITCH · CANDY · BAT · MOON

2. Monster Mash — Medium (ages 8+)
Eight classic Halloween monsters on a 12×12 grid. At this level words can also run right to left and bottom to top, which makes the hunt noticeably trickier.
Words to find: VAMPIRE · ZOMBIE · MUMMY · WEREWOLF · GOBLIN · SKELETON · BANSHEE · GHOUL

3. Trick or Treat — Medium (ages 8+)
Everything you meet on a trick-or-treat walk, from the costume to the candy corn. A friendly, not-at-all-scary puzzle that works well for mixed-age groups.
Words to find: COSTUME · LANTERN · CANDYCORN · CARAMEL · LOLLIPOP · DOORBELL · MASK · TREATS

4. Haunted House — Hard (ages 11+ and adults)
Twelve creepy words on a big 15×15 grid, hidden in all eight directions — including diagonally and backwards. Long words like POLTERGEIST and CANDLESTICK make this the toughest puzzle on the list.
Words to find: COBWEB · CAULDRON · GRAVEYARD · TOMBSTONE · CANDLESTICK · SPIDER · CREAKING · PHANTOM · POLTERGEIST · BROOMSTICK · SKULL · CRYPT

5. Autumn Harvest — Hard (no-scare option)
Not everyone loves ghosts and skeletons. This one celebrates the season instead — scarecrows, hayrides and pumpkin patches — on a 15×15 grid with words in every direction. A good pick for classrooms that keep things fall-themed rather than spooky.
Words to find: SCARECROW · HAYRIDE · ACORN · CORNFIELD · APPLE · CIDER · HARVEST · AUTUMN · PUMPKINPATCH · LEAVES · SQUASH · OCTOBER

Tip: each link builds a fresh grid every time it is opened, so two players racing on the same puzzle get different letter layouts with the same word list. Open it again for a rematch.
How to play
- Click a puzzle link above. The word list appears beside (or below) the grid.
- Find a word, then click or tap its first letter and drag to its last letter.
- Let go. If it is right, the word lights up and is crossed off the list.
- Find every word to finish the puzzle. The timer shows how long you took — try to beat it on a second round.
On the easy puzzle words only run across and down. On medium they can also run backwards and upwards. On hard they can go in any of the eight directions, including diagonally.
How to print a Halloween word search
Every puzzle above doubles as a free printable worksheet:
- Open the puzzle link.
- Click the printer button at the top of the game.
- Choose Print puzzle, or Print with answer key to get a second page with every hidden word shaded.
The printed sheet is black and white to save ink, with the puzzle name, the letter grid, a word list with tick boxes and lines for a name and date — ready to hand out. Each print uses the grid on your screen, so print one copy and photocopy it if the whole class should get the same layout.
Make your own Halloween word search in 2 minutes
Want a puzzle with your class's spelling words, your family's names or your office's in-jokes? Lexicross has a free built-in Board Maker:
- Open Lexicross Word Search and choose Create Custom Board.
- Give your puzzle a name, for example "Room 4 Halloween Hunt".
- Pick a size: Easy (8×8, up to 6 words), Medium (12×12, up to 8 words) or Hard (15×15, up to 12 words).
- Type your words one at a time and press + after each. Use letters only — join two-word phrases together, like CANDYCORN or PUMPKINPATCH.
- Press Generate to play it, Copy Share Link to send it to anyone, or Print to get a paper copy. The link opens the same word list in their browser — no account needed.
That share link is the whole puzzle: paste it into a class page, a group chat, an email or a party invite.
6 ways to use a Halloween word search
- Classroom morning warm-up. Put the easy puzzle on the smartboard and race as a class, or give pairs a tablet each.
- Spelling practice. Make a custom board from this week's spelling list and add one Halloween word as a bonus.
- Party icebreaker. Send the Monster Mash link to every guest and see who finishes fastest before the costume contest.
- Remote team break. Drop the Haunted House link into your team chat on Halloween afternoon and post your times.
- Quiet time for little ones. The Halloween Night puzzle is calm and quick — a good way to wind down after trick-or-treating.
- Family challenge. Everyone plays the same puzzle on their own device; the slowest finisher hands over one piece of candy.
Tips for finding words faster
- Hunt for rare letters first. Words with a Z, W, K or Y (ZOMBIE, WEREWOLF, SKULL) are easier to spot than words full of common letters.
- Scan for double letters. The double M in MUMMY or the double O in BROOMSTICK jumps out of a grid.
- Find the longest words early. POLTERGEIST and PUMPKINPATCH cross a lot of the grid, so they are easier to see — and once found, they leave fewer places for the short words to hide.
- On hard puzzles, check backwards. If you have scanned a row twice and found nothing, read it right to left.
